HMO issues following death of landlord

John got in touch with Landlord advice after his dad who was the landlord of a HMO passed away.  The property had sitting tenants and given the death was unlicensed. Given that John could have been subject to a £5000 fine he wanted to establish what his options were.

We got in touch with Belfast City Council on John’s behalf. We outlined his circumstances and the Council were very understanding. They agreed that the family could apply for another temporary exemption order to allow them time to deal with the sitting tenants or settle the estate and nominate a new owner and apply for a HMO licence.

We relayed this to John and took him through how to go about registering as a HMO and applying for a licence in light of the regulations.
